Sheboygan Press: Barack Obama endorses Kyle Whelton in race against Devin LeMahieu

SHEBOYGAN - Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Kyle Whelton for State Senate, Whelton's campaign said in a release Monday.

A Sheboygan native, Whelton is running against State Sen. Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg, for the District 9 seat.

While Whelton called the endorsement an honor in a press release, LeMahieu called the endorsement "unsurprising."

LeMahieu, who was elected to the Senate in 2014, has endorsements from Sheboygan County Board Chairman Tom Wegner, Sheboygan County District Attorney Joel Urmanski and Sheboygan County Sheriff Cory Roeseler, among others.

Whelton's other endorsements include Run For Something, Only If You Run, Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club of Wisconsin and more.

The 9th Senate District includes areas of Sheboygan, Manitowoc and Calumet counties.

Obama tweeted several endorsements for different offices Monday, listed by state. When Whelton learned of the endorsement, he said he was "overwhelmed."
